Basic Horticulture Courses/ Judy Kirkland, Ginny Allen, Jo Ann Kaminski

This project is a series of seven one-day classes designed to give basic information to the novice as well as the experienced gardener.  These courses are taught by knowledgeable, local personnel approved by the GCG Basic Horticulture committee, and the subjects include:  Trees and Shrubs; Annuals, Biennials, and Perennials, Herbs; Food Gardening and Soil Preparation; Improved Cultivars; Indoor Gardens; and Native Plants. 


Blue Star Memorial/ Peggy Glover

ACGC will propose to place a marker at the new Augusta court house. 


Community Wildlife/ Betsy Ristroph

Our goal is to increase the number of residents who hold Georgia Backyards for Wildlife certificates. Our goal is to have entire neighborhoods certified


Environmental Awareness/ Air Quality/ Norma Patterson

Clubs are encouraged to contact these committee chairmen for current information and program resources on these topics:

stresses air pollution and ways to control.  


Envrionmental Awareness/Birds and Butterflies/ Mary Byrd

Helps coordinate activities relating to birds and butterflies and their habitats, presents programs, and provides assistance.  


Environmental Awareness/Wildlife Resources & Endangered Species/ Leah Mannel

Uses mailings and lectures to encourage members to be aware of our role in nature and the importance of providing backyard habitats for animals, endangered birds, insects, or plants.  , chairman


Environmental Awareness/Litter/ Virginia Wheatley

Encourages club members to recycle and use products made from recycled materials and may present programs on this topic.  


Flower Show/ Barbara Horner, Chair Faye Long, Co-Chair

To be held in conjunction with Sacred Heart Garden Festival, 2012. 


Garden Therapy/ Betty Davis, Chairman.

This program promotes the therapeutic aspects of gardening by providing gardening activities for clients at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville and our regional hospital in Augusta.    Volunteers help maintain flower beds, planters, and vegetable gardens and plan Valentine and watermelon-cutting parties.  Garden Therapy orientation is held in odd-numbered years at Central State Hospital.  The Christmas Sock and Easter Egg programs use patterns provided to make and decorate sock/egg and fill them with goodies for hospital clients.  The Fig Leaf Project involves sending socks, underwear, handkerchief, and toiletry items to the hospitals.  


National Garden Week/ Meredith Nicholson and Nancy Trefz

National Garden week is the first full week in June which tries to focus attention on the role of garden clubs and tells the story of gardening.  The purpose is to publicize the programs, activities, and projects of the garden clubs through radio, television, and newspapers.  Each club is encouraged to schedule special events.


Habitat for Humanity Landscape Project/ Larry Kirkland

Volunteers work with Habitat for Humanity to landscape new houses built in the area.  When the house for the Wounded Warrior is completed, it will be one of the homes to be landscaped. Clubs are encouraged to donate funds to Habitat for Humanity to help with purchasing plants, tools, and soil amendments.  This project receives aid from nurseries who donate plants and business who donate or reduce prices on items.  


Landscape Design Schools/Doris Blalock and Sharyn Altman

This is a four-course series of two-day classes covering a wide range of subjects from landscape design history to landscape architecture to horticulture in the landscape.  Each of the nationally accredited classes requires eleven hours of instruction and an exam


Peek- a-Boo Garden Tour/Ann Leonard

This October 7 tour will feature 6 local gardens including the gardens at Brandon Wilde and will raise funds for the spring luncheon speaker.  Hopefully, it will become an annual tour.


Penny Pines

The purpose of this project is to raise funds for the replacement of indigenous trees in areas that have been damaged by wildfires or other disasters.  The minimum amount accepted by the NGC Penny Pines is $68.00. Clubs can give the entire donation or donate lesser amounts to the council which can combine it with donations from other clubs.  Special collection boxes were provided last year.


Pull a Tab for Ronald McDonald House/ Ginny Allen

ACGC will continue supporting this project. We encourage all club members to save tabs from drink and soup cans and get them to the local chairman, Ginny Allen.  Our local Ronald McDonald house turns them in for cash to meet some of the house needs.  


Riverwalk Perennial Garden/ Bonnie McClain

Starting in 2000, the ACGC has developed and maintained this Savannah River front garden which has won state and national awards for historic preservation
